Hi. I’m Julia, a mum of two little wild ones and a former photographer from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Motherhood has moved me to question everything in my life. Social media, our everyday lives, what we share, how we are present… whatever it may be, motherhood gives you a new perspective on life.
In my last year, I was self-employed — I turned my photography into my profession. What happened as a result was that I wanted to pick up my camera less and less. I always thought that becoming a photographer would fulfil me. After all, I would be turning what I love into the thing I earn my living from. But I very quickly felt that the creative part behind it was getting lost. I took photographs because I had to, not because I wanted to.
So, this October, I started something new: a degree. I am now studying Social Work at a local university, and I have deregistered my self-employment.
But what do I do now with my creative heart?
I decided to start taking photographs for myself again. And I want to document that here on my blog. I want to motivate myself more to pick up my camera and capture our everyday lives with it. As imperfect as it is.
To document my little creative internet diary here. To take photographs for myself.
Because there is one thing I have now understood:
I love living this wild, crazy life. With my two children, my husband and our two cats.
I always thought that in the modern blogging world, you had to be one thing above all else: perfect. Pinterest-approved. Valuable. You had to offer value. The days of personal blogs were over.
But who actually decided that?
I’m doing this for myself. For my children. For people who also think that none of this is over at all.
Our four-room apartment is anything but Pinterest-perfect. It is old, dusty and unaesthetic. Our furniture gets scratched by our cats. There are always crumbs on the floor. Our shelves are full of children’s books that are falling apart. The children’s rooms are colourful. Our walls are crazy. Our dining table is covered in drawings and scratches. Our terrace is slowly going to waste. Our hallway is full of wellies and sand.
But that is exactly what I miss online. I miss seeing real pictures of real families, just as they exist alongside all the Pinterest-perfect families. We exist, too. And I want to take the first step towards securing a place for us, so that others who live like we do can feel seen.
But without content that is made quickly. Without Reels and TikToks. Just a very simple, chaotic, ordinary life with two little wild hearts.
Welcome to Our Wild Hearts.
